Testing and Certifications
Our testing and certification procedures have been formulated through decades of on-site testing and surveying. Many of our test procedures are highly specialised and can only be carried out by experienced technicians and specialised equipment.
Testing should include the following:
- Soil-resistivity surveys (various methods)
- Earth-resistance testing (various methods)
- Lightning mast conductivity testing (specialised equipment)
- Down-conductor (re-inforced concrete) resistance testing
- Underground services scanning and detection
- Earthing arrangement type and layout detection
- Equipotential bonding measurements (electrical continuity)

Assessments and Inspections
Our testing and verification procedures are performed in such a way that they are repeatable, well documented and follow the highest levels of quality control. As part of the assessment procedures, we review the earthing and lightning protection system installation photographs, as-built design drawings, component test certificates and installation safety reports.
It is therefore critical to ensure that the systems are intact and fully functional - a substandard or damaged protection system can actually be worse than having no protection at all. And therefore, while some might call it policing, we call it quality assurance.
Therefore, to give you peace of mind, our testing and verification procedures are performed in such a way that they are repeatable, well documented and follow the highest levels of quality control. As part of the assessment procedures, we review the earthing and lightning protection system installation photographs, as-built design drawings, component test certificates and installation safety reports.
Maintenance inspections and tests should include the following:
- Routine testing of earthing and lightning protection systems
- Routine inspections of SPD installations
- Visual inspections, for corrosion of conductors and connections
- Visual inspections, for lightning and/or physical damages to conductors
- Thermographic inspections of electrical and PV installations
- Compile maintenance tests, inspection procedures and check sheets
- Risk identification and assessments including mitigation methods
- Installation inspections (during installation)
- Site compliance assessments including correction measures (repairs)
- Route cause analysis (RCA) of failures
- Verification of lightning protection coverage

Electrical and Maintenance
The regular inspection, testing and maintenance of earthing and lightning protection systems is essential to maintain the functionality, reliability and compliance of the protection systems.
Maintenance
Preventive maintenance is about condition monitoring of equipment and extending the mean time between failures (MTBF). Instead of doing the repairs during breakdowns, it is better to carry out the replacements during planned shutdowns.
From an electrical and earthing point of view, this entails visual inspections and testing of installations. This also requires the keeping of accurate records of previous inspections and test results, which must be used as a basis for comparison of the new results. In this way an estimate can be made of the rate of deterioration of the equipment, and maintenance schedules can be adjusted accordingly.
Repairs
Repairs are often done during unplanned breakdowns and mostly result in the loss of production, which is costly. Due to the repairs being done under breakdown conditions, short cuts are often taken, and interlocking systems are bypassed to get the equipment operational as fast as possible. Repairs under breakdown conditions can result in unsafe acts and conditions, which in turn often result in accidents and injuries. When repairs are conducted by people who may not be fully trained, this results in sub-standard repairs and workmanship.
Maintenance inspections and tests should include the following:
- Routine inspections of SPD installations
- Visual inspections, for corrosion of conductors and connections
- Visual inspections, for lightning and/or physical damages to conductors
- Routine testing of earthing and lightning protection systems
- Thermographic inspections of electrical and PV installations
- Routine testing of PFC capacitors and RCD devices
- Testing of the functionality of critical interlocking systems
- Compile maintenance tests, inspection procedures and check sheets

Solar
Testing of the Lightning protection system on your solar system is vital to ensure that the lightning protection system is correctly installed and that it protects your solar system against a direct lightning strike.
Further more it is critical that your down conductor and earthing system is correctly installed and tested with a 10Amp down conductor test and the correct earthing tests.
Solar maintenance is a key aspect to making sure that your solar system works at full capacity. Solar cleaning and IV curve testing needs to be done on a regular basis as dirty panels generate 10-25% less electricity because of dust, grime, animal droppings and dirt. Solar panels also need get inspected for cracks or damages and then replaced.
Tests and maintenance inspections should include the following:
- Cleaning at heights
- Solar Panel Cleaning & Maintenance
- Testing of solar earthing system
- Testing of solar equipotential bonding
- Thermographic inspections of PV installations
- IV Curve testing
- Looking for cracks and damage on panels
- Buried Horizontal Earth Conductor Location tests
- 10 Amp Down conductor and rebar test
- Soil resistivity tests
- Solar installation – Residential/replacement
- Lightning and hail detection
